Lakeside Academy, a contemporary residential boarding school for troubled teen boys, needed the setting and the facilities that would make their vision possible. They brought in Station 19 to partner with them to transition a 100-year-old Girl Scout camp on a pristine lake into a residence hall, dining facility, and classroom and office space.
A sheltered entrance canopy supported by a bold, galvanized steel cross reflects the Academy’s faith-based foundation. The residence building, once a summertime activity center, was re-imagined as a year-round lodge for up to 60 boys. The upper level, with the picturesque lake views, became the boys’ residences while the walk-out lower level provides shared public spaces for counseling and family visits. An addition extends generous, lodge-like hallways with natural light provided by high performance, low-efficiency windows. A new multi-use sports/parking court adjacent to the residence allows convenient supervised sports activities with new accessible routes throughout camp. The facility, the surroundings, and the many updates to gathering spaces, hallways, lights, and windows all provide Lakeside Academy with the setting to accomplish their vision.
