MNTC Freedom Manor
Minneapolis, MN
Remodel
Size: 57,365 square foot
Completed: Frebruary 2024
Mn Adult & Teen Challenge Freedom Manor required a transformation to meet its new programmatic needs, but the project presented several obstacles. The existing building had previously addressed structural deficiencies and deferred maintenance issues, yet these corrections added complexity to further modifications. Design challenges included narrow, maze-like hallways, insufficient restroom facilities, and the need to convert short-term housing into long-term accommodations. Security and functionality also needed significant upgrades to meet the ministry’s goals.
Station 19 Architects worked closely with the client to overcome these hurdles, so that together, we could create a space that incorporates thoughtful and practical design solutions. Key improvements included:
- Widening hallways to improve flow and wayfinding.
- Converting short-term housing rooms into comfortable suites with private bedrooms and dedicated restrooms to accommodate long-term stays.
- Relocating and redesigning offices to support staff comfort and efficiency.
- Refreshing the building’s interior and exterior finishes to enhance durability and create a warm, inviting environment for staff and residents.
- Transforming an underutilized garage into a functional dining space where people can gather for meals.
The remodel has transformed Freedom Manor into a welcoming and durable home that truly reflects Mn Adult & Teen Challenge’s mission. The revitalized space now provides a comfortable and supportive environment for long-term residents, while creating better spaces for staff to work and connect. With these thoughtful updates, the facility is ready to serve the ministry and its community for many years to come.
