Hope Academy of Minneapolis faced steady growth within their school and had inadequate facilities to support the growth. They also saw that it was time for a more competition-level basketball facility. These needs and demands were complicated by the fact that their existing building was landlocked. They could not expand out, and so they would need to expand up.
And that would require partnership.
Hope Academy partnered with Station 19 Architects to collaboratively, creatively solve the problems in front of them. A new gym would be built atop the 2nd floor roof of the building. This solution naturally raised a concern surrounding noise, as the classrooms below the new gymnasium would need to be protected from the potential of constant distractions. To resolve this, a floor system was installed that isolated sound transfer from the gym to the classrooms below.
An expanded cafeteria space was added to the main level of another roof of the existing facility. A vision for Hope Academy's future expansion led this space to be designed and structured for another story to be built on top of it.
With a creative eye toward design and a willingness to look at seemingly impossible problems with a fresh perspective, Station 19 and Hope Academy were able to create essential spaces for their existing students while also taking strategic steps for their future.
